Working in clay incorporates and facilitates the development of many functional skills to include: sensory processing and self regulation, gross and fine motor skills, hand strengthening, motor planning and organizational skills, tool use, delayed gratification, bilateral coordination and sequencing. Science, math and history play a role in the learning processes along with a basic understanding of the technical aspects of ceramics (firing processes). As a result of working with a wide range of clients, (preschool through high school aged students, elderly citizens, and special needs children and adults), for over the past twenty-five years, I can easily adjust the interaction needed for creating the optimal learning environment.
